AE Attached Disks - Won't wake and ...

Add this to the existing string of issues with attached disks.

New LaCie 1TB Poulton drive, along with another 250gb drive attached to powered USB, attached to Airport Extreme and new MBP. 1TB holds iTunes, and other disk is for Time Machine.

Problem 1: When I startup, the disks do not automatically mount. I have to browse the AE to get them to show up and be available.

Problem 2: If the MPB goes to sleep, the disks will not stay available. They usually still appear on the desktop, but attempts to access them freezes Finder for up to 2 minutes. If it recovers, all is ok--but if not, Finder crashes and the MPB must be rebooted.

This is really a huge problem for me, as the behavior is just erratic. I've downgraded to 7.4.1, and didn't see any improvement or change in behavior. I am at the point where I am considering moving my iTunes library off of the external disk and back local, just so I don't have to deal with this anymore.

Any other ideas or surgery I can do on the AE settings? There has to be a solution here...

Thanks in advance.

Not seeing the AirPort Extreme's ...

I having issues with my AirPort Extreme. I'm not sure exactly where the issue is so I'm posting here for some suggestions.

Basically, I'm running a MacBook Pro (see below for stats) with an AirPort Extreme base station (model before dual-band, N-draft capable, latest firmware). I don't think my laptop is broken because I can see the neighbor's network, though it's just out of reach for me to connect to. The problem is, my AirPort says it's fine. I tried restarting, uploading new firmware and even went as far as bringing i back to factory settings.

The problem is, the light still is green and I still don't see a network. To make things more interesting ethernet seems to be working fine (I'm using it now). I'd love to test another computer on the network so I can be sure the laptop isn't the problem but at the moment I'm the only person with a computer that can be used (dad's got a nasty virus). I'll be trying my computer on a different network tomorrow at work so I can verify it then.

That's one other thought I've had. I went down to grab my dad's laptop and see if it could connect when he told me to leave it because something was running havoc on the system a little bit before I lost my connection suddenly.

I lost the connection while running Windows, by the way.

I don't think the two are connected or that if they were it's something a factory reset couldn't fix.

I'm out of ideas. Can anyone make any suggestions? Specifically how to double-check to make sure the AirPort isn't broken and doesn't know it?

Airport express as gaming adapter ...

SoI'm new to this. I don't have a router or modem, I pick my internet up on my macbook over a wireless connection provided by my school. I have a printer, that uses ethernet, but no wi fi connection (I'm cheap/poor).

I have a samsung bluy ray player that has an ethernet port for downloading netflix and otehr online content. Problem, no ehternet router to connect to.

I need to use my computer to access the internet and then I need to get the internet to the blu ray. Samsung sells a LinkStick for 80 bucks, it's proprietary and is otherwise useless. I've thought about a gaming adapter, but then I thought about the airport express.

How would I go about setting up the blu ray connection to the laptop? What devices do I need.A base station? An Airport Extreme, and Airport Express?

Is there a way I can set this up so that my printer is added to the network for remote printing?

And is there a way I can have 2 mac books connect to the printer for remote printing?

I suspect there is an easy naswer, but I'm clueless.

Help.

I've had my airport for over a year and it's worked great. About a month or so ago, I noticed that my signal strength would suddenly diminish to one bar or cut out all together. Now, I'll start with full strength and within 30 minutes or so it will suddenly cut out. I physically bring my laptop next to the airport to reestablish the connection and it works great, then I walk 20 ft away and I lose the signal. It used to be that I could walk outside my house and have a full signal. Now I can't go down the hall. Does this sound like an update issue? I think I have all the recent updates.

Poor wireless N through walls and ...

I have an Airport Extreme Base Station with a 5GHz Wireless N Network. I've also got a 50Mbps down/1.5Mbps up internet connection.

When I'm in the same room as the router, and run an Internet speed test (from www.speedtest.net) on my MacBook, I get between 46 and 50 Mbps download and 1.5 upload, which is the same as I get when plugging an ethernet cable directly into the AEBS. If I move to the room above, I get about 20Mbps down and 1.5Mbps up.

If I move to the room behind the one above, the signal degrades to the point where I'm getting 7.5Mbps download and 1.5Mbps upload.

I've tried changing the multicast rate to see if I can improve the range, but it hasn't helped. I thought wireless N was supposed to solve the problem of going through walls and floors, but I'm finding it no better than 802.11g in my house.

Any ideas what I can do before running an ethernet cable directly from my AEBS to my study?

Netgear WNR2000 connection problems. ...

Hey there, my first post here so don't be mean if I'm being dumb

I got my first Mac recently, the 17" Unibody Macbook Pro (Late 2008 model), and I've been having a few problems with Airport Extreme. For most networks, airport works just as well as my old Windows laptop, but it seems to really not like our WNR2000. Normally it works fine, DHCP assigns me an IP and everything is great! As soon as I go to University and try to connect it to the wireless network there (which is awful, and normally doesn't work), then come back home and try to connect to our Wi-Fi, it simply won't do it. It refuses to get an IP address from the router, and even when setting the IP/Subnet/Router IP manually, it just won't work. I wind up with some self-assigned IP which is entirely wrong and it seems like it's just not talking to the router at all! The only way for me to fix this is to reboot the router, and then it works absolutely fine!

It's starting to drive me mad having to reboot our router all the time, and I've never had this problem with any other machine. I have tried fiddling with all the network settings I can find, but nothing seems to make any difference.

Is there something I am doing wrong, or something you could advise me to do? Or are OS X systems just not great at finding routers on a network sometimes?

Cheers in advance

Now that I have this new notebook, I can't see that network on the airport list that appears when I click the airport icon ... but it does appear when I look at the System Profiler list of surrounding networks.
Another information that could help, is that the name of this hidden free and open network, is exactly the same as another that does have a wep encryption. Airport disk won't let Windows 7 copy ...

Dear readers,

I've got an Airport Extreme, with a PC (win7x64), Mac mini and USB disk (Lacie Porsche design 500Gb) connected (wired Gbit).
To get acces to the disk I already changed the Windows settings below. Now when I copy several files or 1 big file to the Airport-disk, Windows pops a message that the connection is lost (although I still see the disk in Explorer). I can chosse "skip" to skip the first file, after which the rest is copied perfectly.
The Synchronize tool "SyncToy" has no problem copiing any file to the disk.

So it seems Explorer has a problem initiating a connection needed for copiing in a first attempt, right? Perhaps SyncToy is more patient and waiting for a good connection?
Does anybody have a idea how to solve this?

Thank you

Noisy AEx Dual Band? ...

Got my AEx Dual Band and set it up this weekend. Connects via 5GHz to an AppleTV and Time Capsule; via LAN to my iMac / NAS / printer.

Good speeds, internet surfing is great, etc. It's as silent as a church mouse.

Tonight, the AppleTV was doing a major sync (hundreds of songs) and The Time Capsule began a backup. Call me crazy, but the AEx dual band started making noise!!! I swear I could hear a faint buzz with every song that was synced (you can see the titles progress on iTunes).

After cancelling the sync, all is silent again.

The AppleTV and Time Capsule are a couple of rooms away, so they are not the culprit.

Anyone else "hear" their AEx Dual Band?

Thanks

Will

EDIT: It DEFINITELY "buzzes" when syncing the AppleTV!!! Is this normal?

Mac OSX server not supported behind ...

For a customer, I recently installed a new XServe, within a local network with an Airport Extreme (n) with FW 7.4.2. Mac OSX Server manages the router (which has a fixed IP from the ISP). Because the Mac OSX Server runs a DNS server (supporting a local domain), OSX Server reconfigured the Airport Extreme, so that it would forward DNS queries to the server. The server's dns server will forward queries for non-local domains to the ISP's dns servers.

All clients get their IP configuration using DHCP from the router. You can't use the DHCP service of the server, as you can't disable DHCP on the router (in NAT mode).

All clients get the router's IP as the dns server.

HOWEVER:

The Airport Extreme can't connect to the internal DNS server! It doesn't seem to be able to route dns requests to the internal network (verified using nslookup). Any dns queries sent to the router will time out.

Come on, Airport Extreme team.. you can't claim the Airport Extreme to be the ideal router in combination with an OSX server, if this simple and very common setup is not supported! How hard can it be to either:

...Allow us to disable DHCP on the router (even when in NAT mode), so we can use the OSX server for this (which will dispatch the correct DNS settings)
...Allow the router to route DNS queries to the local DNS (OSX) server (which should be working anyway)

I have an Airport Extreme setup with an 20" imac connected thru ethernet. I also have a 17" Macbook Pro connected wireless. Both have no problems connecting to the internet but I want to be able to talk to each other. I checked and the wired network has a different subnet then the wireless one. I would like to have them both on the same subnet but I can't seem to find a setting in my airport extreme that will allow me to change that.. The wired network seems to be the same subnet as the assigned address from my ISP. I only have 1 address from my ISP so the airport is not acting like a switch it is routing the data just creating a internal network based on the ip from the ISP. The wireless is handing out ip address that I have setup in the DHCP section.

DHCP problems with public IP ...

Hi everyone,

I use a iMac (2007) witch is connected by wire to an Airport Extreme (2009). The Airport Extreme is connected by wire to our FortiNet60.

Till yesterday I had a connection to the other Macs and the internet. Yesterday I joind the mobile.me and want to use the "back to my mac"-function.

Until then the Airport had a fix IP itself and the DHCP was with a range from 192....100 to 192.....200.

Like its said in the manual I changed the DHCP-range to "public" to have the option "NAT" and when saving I get two problems: The starting DHCP-adress and the ending DHCP-adress doesn't work. When changing the starting DHCP-adress to 192.168.....1 it works but the ending not. I tried all from 2 to 255 but always the message there will be a conflict with this range.

What can I do?

When setting the "Internet" from manual to DHCP the DHCP-range will be accepted. But the I have no connection to the internet because I get an IP for the Airport 169.175....

Thanks

But, after I start to use Safari to open a website, the connection drops unexpectedly, and a dialog box displaying an error that 'A wireless connection has to be compromised and it will be disabled for a minute' appears, then the connection gone.

The most ridiculuos thing is that when I open my Macbook to browse the Internet, the other users' connection (all of them is Microsoft users) also gets disconnected. However, if I close my Macbook, none of issues like that happens.

Just bought a brand new iomega Prestige 1.5 TB USP hard drive and formatted it to HSF (Journaled).

The drive is recognized when it's plugged directly into my Mac Mini running the latest update of Snow Leopard (10.6.1) and I can run Time Machine just fine.

My AirPort Extreme (802.11n) however cannot see the drive when it's plugged directly into the base station. Nothing shows up.

The AEBS is running the latest firmware, and the USB drive has its own external power. It seems that other users have been able to use this drive as an AirDisk without incident. Any advice will be appreciated.

Seagate FreeAgent Desk 2TB Airport ...

My scenario:

1) New MBP and new Seagate FreeAgent Desk 2TB external drive
2) Formatted drive as MacOS Extended (journaled)
3) Mounted with direct connection (USB) and copied about 100GB to the drive
4) Attached to AE running 7.4.2 over USB
5) AE turns amber and throws an error on the utility--"Disk Needs Repair"
6) Reattach to desktop with no problem. Disk Utility shows no problems.
7) Currently have another LaCie 250GB drive attached to the AE, and it works perfectly.
8) Downgraded to 7.4.1 and 7.4 with no change. Upgraded back to 7.4.2.

I've read about a myriad of problems people are having with USB AirDisks, but can't seem to resolve this. The drive is formatted as HFS , and I really am not in the mood to reformat it to something else for the sake of the AE.

Anyone with a similar setup or any ideas on how to resolve--would be very appreciative in hearing from you. Thanks.

Airport Extreme Wireless Printing with ...

I have two base stations in my home office: an Airport Express that's connected to the cable modem, and an older Airport Extreme (A1034) that's connected to my printer on the other side of the room. They were networked together so that I could go online or print wirelessly without a problem, until I upgraded to Snow Leopard. Now I can go online, and I can print directly from a USB cable to my HP printer, but I can't print wirelessly. The Extreme doesn't seem to show up at all in Airport Utility. Is there a way to get this to work again? Thanks.

2 Airport Extreme's (1 With LAN ...

Hi There!

I currently have a Airport Extreme "N" Base Station (Non Gigabit) and 3 Airport Express "N" Base Stations.

I am going to be upgrading my Airport Extreme "N" Base Station (Non Gigabit) to the (Gigabit) version. The WAN Port of the Airport Extreme "N" Base Station (Gigabit) version will be connected to my Hi-Speed Modem and "1" LAN port will be connected to a Cisco 16 Port Gigabit (Unmanaged) Switch. The remaining LAN Ports will be left empty.

My personal home computers will connect either wired or wirelessly to the Airport Extreme "N" Base Station (Gigabit) version. I will most likely use the 3 Airport Express "N" Base Stations to Extend and broadcast Air Tunes on this network.

My question is can I connect the Airport Extreme "N" Base Station (Non Gigabit) version to my Switch to create a 2nd Wireless network with access to the Internet Only for guests to use? I want them to access the Internet but not my LAN.

I believe some Router Manufacturers have a feature called AP (Access Point) Isolation or Wireless Client Isolation.

Thanks In Advance!
Marcus

Airport disk: connection failed ...

Hello,

I currently use an 750gb airport disk for time machine backups at home. Only two computers use it as a backup volume.

I have a powered USB hub with a printer and the harddrive connected to the airport disk.

EVery now and then (lately everyday) the finder in either computer fails to mount the airport disk. I get a "connection failed" error. I can, however, print without any issues.

Any ideas what could be happening? I'm getting tired of resetting the airport extreme EVERY day.

thanks!!

Ps. I just tried and unplugging the USB cable from the airport extreme and immediately plugging it back solved the connection error. It's faster than restarting the airport extreme but still quite annoying to have to unplug the thing every day

Airport Extreme 7.4.2 software- USB ...

I saw a post regarding my problem and posted to the topic, here.
http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=9762280#9762280

Found what I think is the answer, but not too sure it'll stay working. Be sure to save your config info from the old set up before installing.

My thought was to restore the Factory Settings after the firmware install. Then, set up the AEBS to your network from scratch. The goal is to keep your USB connected drive from going off line. You can see from the above thread that many people have an issue with this software upgrade with a USB drive attached.

So far after doing this, my drive is no longer going off line. It has only been an hour, but it is still on line and I think that it's going strong. GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR base station. I think that Apple should fix their instructions at the very least to let people know about this problem.

USB storage unavailable after 7.4.2 ...

My USB attached 750gb hard drive is no longer listed or available as a shared device from any of my Macs after the 7.4.2 upgrade.

I've downgraded to 7.4.1, which has resolved the problem.

The device has one partition, and I'm using user authentication to control access.

I double-checked the 7.4.2 config, and it looks clean. Has anyone else had this problem?

Airport Extreme Internet help! ...

I have just purchased the Airport Extreme and have tried to set the unit up. Is there a way I can get internet without having a seperate broadband router plugged into the station? I am with Sky broadband and am using a Netgear router. At the moment I have the telephone line into the Netgear and a Ethernet cable from the netgear into the station. Can I bypass the netgear and use the station only to access the internet? If so how? Unfortunately the manual doesnt clearly state how this is done.

If this isnt possible is there another solution to avoid to many boxes and wires?

Thanks Martin

Apple AirPort drivers only support a ...

The Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) specification allows users to specify up to four different WEP keys when configuring a router and for the specification of a "key index" (also sometimes called the "Default Transmit Key") used to specify which of the encryption keys is required to associate with the network. By manually specifying a different key index, an administrator would be able to manually rotate among the WEP keys without having to enter new keys each time.

However, AirPort drivers, in compliance with the Wi-Fi Alliance standard, will only associate with a WEP encrypted network when the router is set to use the key corresponding to a key index of 1.

Configuration of a router to use a key index other than 1 will likely result in either a failure to associate with the chosen network, or association will occur but no IP address will be assigned by the router's DHCP server; the precise failure will be router manufacturer dependent.

Apple AirPort base stations do not provide for the configuration of multiple WEP keys, so this issue does not occur when connecting to a WEP network created by an Apple AirPort device.

As a reminder, WEP has long since been broken due to weak encryption and has been deprecated as a network security protocol. It should never be used except to prevent only the most casual of users from associating with your network; it also should never be used in environments where any data security of any type is desired.

Whenever creating a wireless network, whether with Apple AirPort base stations or with third party routers, the use of WPA or WPA2 encryption in conjunction with a strong passphrase is highly recommended to keep your wireless network secure.

For more information on designing and creating AirPort networks, please see the Apple document Designing AirPort Networks.
