I bought a Lacie D2 Quadra 1 TB HD to do wireless backups with my Airport Extreme. I partitioned the drive to 2 drives, one is 250 GB and the TM backup drive is 750 GB. I formatted them with Disk Utility using the default Mac OSX Extended (Journaled) format.
All the initial backups went fine (I used ethernet) and for a couple days the wireless updated backups went fine. However, now once every day or two I get a "Delayed" message in the TM preference pane saying that it couldn't connect to the backup volume. I can fix this by restarting the AEBS, but would like to not have to do this every day or two. What can I do to permanently fix this? Any help is much appreciated.

Feature request: allow local ethernet ...
I have a Draytek Vigor 120 ADSL modem which I understand Apple recommend. Unfortunately it seems that while it is connected to the WAN interface of the AEBS, and the AEBS is configured to use PPPoE you cannot access the web or telnet servers provided by the Vigor, meaning you're in the dark about the ADSL line status and you cannot monitor or change configuration.
192.168.1.0/24(LAN)
192.168.1.1(AEBS)
192.168.2.1(ADSL modem)
A "hack" suggested by users of other routers is to loopback the WAN interface to the LAN and plug the modem into the LAN. This appears to cause interface flapping on the AEBS (as one would expect) and teardown of PPP every 10-15s so is not a solution. You can talk to the device on 192.168.2.1 as long as you alias yourself an IP on that subnet.
What I would like to see Apple implement would be an option to allow direct ethernet routing of either all non-internet-routable networks or specific networks (in my case 192.168.2.0/24) over the WAN interface.
Eg.
192.168.1.10-

Guest network ...
Great feature, but can't get it to work despite a lot of manual reading and forum searching. Here is my setup:
Airport Extreme is connected to Ethernet network, assigned a static IP address and using DHCP to distribute IP addresses to laptops connecting to the Ethernet network through it.
If I choose the option under the Internet tab/Connection Sharing to "Distribute a range of IP Addresses" everything works great as far as the laptops accessing the network and Internet, but the Guest Network tab and option disappear.
If I choose "Share a public IP address", the Guest Network tab and option becomes available, but I get an error message that DHCP range conflicts with the WAN IP address. The only fix I can figure out is to change the DHCP range to a different subnet. But then the laptops can only access the Internet, not the Ethernet network.
I hope to end up with 1 Airport Extreme distributing IP addresses to our laptops that enable them to be on our network and distributing IP addresses of a different subnet to the Guest network laptops enabling them to access only the Internet. Then when working as described, having other Airport Extremes being in Bridge Mode to distribute this setup seamlessly throughout our campus.
Am I wishing for too much or just missing something?
Thanks in advance for your help,
Kyle

Airport Extreme and BT Home Hub (V2 ...
I want an AEBS to improve my existing wireless network. Having two networks would be ideal with an AEBS. I have been a BT Broadband customer for nearly 7 years and my contract is due to expire in October. I am happy to stay with BT if I can use an AEBS with the home hub (just as a modem). If this is not an option, I will be looking for a new ISP - probably O2 at the moment.
Any comments or thoughts greatly appreciated.

Each Airport device asking for ...
My network consists of 2 AEBS and 2 AEs. There is no network password at the moment.
I just opened up Airport Utility to check a setting and when I double clicked on my main AEBS it asked for a password. I checked every device. They are all asking for a password which doesn't exist, before allowing me to even see the configurations. This happened before with an AE that I was trying to reset, the only way around it was to hook the AE to my mac with ethernet. I really don't want to have to do that every time I want to make a change to my network. Anyone know what's going on here? The same thing happens if I click on Manual Setup or Continue.

Old Airport Extreme Base Station ...
I recently upgraded my Airport Extreme Base Station to a new 2 channel unit. During installation I first removed the original base station, then set up the new unit. During setup, a prompt appeared asking me if I wanted to use my old configuration. After indicating "yes", the unit was set up quickly.
However, when I now open Airport Utility it shows 3 Airport Units (2 Airport Extreme and 1 Airport Express). How do I remove the original Airport Extreme unit from the list? When I highlight the unit, then select "manual", a prompt appears saying "an error occurred when reading the configuration", which is what I would expect since the unit no longer exists. Yet, there seems to be no way within Airport Utility to remove the unit.
Here's what the current list looks like with the old unit listed first:
Appreciate any feedback. Thanks

Wifi connection issues post OS 10.1 and ...
I'm really not sure where to post this and will take any suggestions.
In one day I installed the following updates to my MacPro and iPhone : OS 10.6.1 and iPhone 3.01. Both alleged to fix wifi connectivity issues. I now can no longer maintain a connection to either the computer or the iPhone via wifi.
We have five computers and 3 iphones in this household and only the updated computer and iPhone have been affected. The Airport Extreme (n-dual band) works fine with ALL the devices that were not updated. Previously, both the MacPro and iPhone connected without a hitch. When connected by ethernet, the MacPro is able to connect to the Airport. The phone can connect to other networks. NO changes whatsoever were made to the Airport, however, I have restarted it repeatedly to see if that would correct the issue.
The network is secured with WPA/WPA2 Personal and have a dual network running - both a 5Mhz and a 2.9 Mhz. It does NOT have a guest network established.
According to the Airport Log, "WPA handshake failed with STA likely due to bad password from client". The password used sure matches what's used on the other computers/iphones.
Finally, for the record, I threw out all my preferences relating to wifi on the MacPro, restarted it and also performed a hard reboot on the iPhone.

MacBook Pro will not connect to Airport ...
My new late-2008 MacBook Pro will not connect wirelessly to one of my Airport Extreme routers (single-band model). Both my MB Air and my iPhone find and connect automatically without problem. The MB Pro continually asks for a password (although the correct password is stored in the keychain) and, when the password is re-entered, eventually returns a "connection time out" message. Currently I am making do with a direct ethernet connection but would be appreciate any pointers of things to try.
Note that the firmware of the router was updated recently and the MBPro has all the latest updates.

I want to setup a 5 ghz wide channel n-only network and extend it with an airport express via Ethernet. I want to get the maximum speed the wifi is capable of. I have tried every combination. Even though I get green lights on both, it slows down to much less than with the extreme by itself. I have scoured the Internet. Please help!

Hy!
We have 2 Macs, but this Problem appears just on a 1 Year Old iMac.
I connect to the Internet via Airport to a Time Capsule.
Under Leopard there where also Conection drops(about all 60 Min.) but i could deactivate Airport via the Symbol on the Desktop and finaly after reactivation everything went fine for another hour.
Since i updatet to Snowleopard 10.6.1 the connection drops every 1-2 Minutes. And strange is i cant deactivate the Airportconnection.......
I live now with a long Ethernetcable but this would be the first Problem with a Mac without a solution.Since my Problems with Macs where ever with Airport
It must be on the iMacs Side because with ibook and iphones everything is fine.
when the proble ocours the Airport Utility says ther ist a connection to the Time Capsule but not to the ISP. But in the same time i can go to Internet with other devices.....

Understanding dual band setup (or not) ...
Maybe I'm being stupid, but having easily grasped the concept of the new Dual Band AEBS, I'm finding the implementation less than intuitive. Hope someone can answer some questions.
When selecting the Radio Mode for this AEBS in AirPort Utility, am I correct in thinking that before the dash is the 5 GHz and after the dash is for the 2.4 GHz band? If so, then it's a nice concise way to specify it, but WHERE DOES IT TELL YOU THIS? I first saw this and was more than a little confused. The latest Designing AirPort Networks etc manual omits to make ANY mention of this latest AEBS and I can only guess that my assumption is correct.
Also, where does it tell you that the name (SSID) you enter on the main Wireless tab/page is for the 2.4 GHz band (or presumably both if you don't opt for a different name) and you must choose Wireless Options to find that you can specify a different name for the 5 GHz band?
I have to say that wonderful though it is to be able to operate on dual bands simultaneously, the interface in AirPort Utility leaves a lot to be desired and the documentation is er, well, NON existent.
Unless someone can point out where this is all documented so I didn't need to be fumbling about guessing for so long.

Can't change Airport Extreme Stations ...
Situation:
I've got 2 Airport Extreme in my house because of the thick walls. Each AP Extreme works fine. I can change the Airport directly by selecting it on the top Button with my MacBook. But using my MBP (2,8 500 GB, the new big one) with Snow Leo it is not possible to change the Airport Extreme Station nor switching it OFF at the MBP.
Question: Do we have a bug on SL because I can not switch off the Airport Card? I reinstalled Snow Leo but it does not help. It is also not possible in system preferences (Network) to switch off the MBP's Airport Card.
Any idea? Is the hardware damaged? Is it a software problem? How to check and solve?

How to have some fixed IPs with port ...
I'm trying to hook my iMac (G5, 10.4) up to my Airport Extreme (ethernet) with the mac having a static IP address and ports forwarded to it. I have other computers (my work laptop) connected via ethernet or sometimes wireless and other wireless computers, or my Tivo box, where I would prefer the IP to be assigned by the Extreme.
I see tutorials out there but they are with really old Airport Utility/Admin versions and don't really match up with what I see with the latest Utility versions.
I'm wondering if someone could post a set of instructions to make this work? I'd love to know what the settings are on the Airport Extreme (Airport Utility) as well as the iMac's network settings, and if I need to do anything special to the others that I want to get their IP addresses dynamically.
Not that I think it makes a difference, but the Extreme is also extended by an Airport Express.
I'm probably going to reset the Extreme and Express (been messing around trying to do this and they're a little messed up now) so you can assume I'm starting from scratch.
I'm not really smart about all the network settings, so any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Airport Extreme signal strength question ...
hello,
I just recently set up my new airport extreme base station, but have been having problems. I have a 12" PowerBook G4 and my girlfriend has a MacBook that has an 'N' wireless card, mine has a 'G.' While sitting in the same room, she can connect to the wireless with no problems, while the signal strength for me fluctuates a bit and sometimes drops out complete (or when I open my computer I cant even connect). I changed the 'G' channel to 2 instead of automatic and that seems to help a bit, but I am no more than 30 (probably less) feet away when it does this, in clear site of the router. I never had a problem with my old D-link. When I open internet connection, I only have about 4 bars out of 15. Did I set something up wrong? Is it the router? My computer? Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Matt

Time Capsule gets valid iP address, but ...
I recently bought an dual band airport extreme base station so that I could run dual N and b/g compatible wifi networks. Since I already have a single band Time Capsule, I figured I could use that in bridge mode to extend the network. Great in theory, but in practice I can't make it work.
Even though I copied my settings directly from the Time Capsule, which always did and continues to get a valid IP address from the Comcast Cable modem ethernet, the dual band Airport Extreme can not create a wifi network that gets a valid IP address. What could possibly be different about the AE from the single band Time Capsule that would make one work and the other not work?
Any ideas?

New MacBook Pro, Time Machine Backup ...
Just bought a new Macbook Pro over the weekend, and over night I tried a Time Machine Backup via ethernet cable to an empty partition on a hard drive attached to my Airport Extreme. In the morning, I checked and everything had gone smoothly without error messages. My hard drive has 160 GB of data. When I checked the "sparse bundle" backup file I saw it was several gigs less (I can't remember how much less, but right now, a few more backups later it is up to 155 GB).
I checked the system log in Console, and saw several messages of the following variety: "backing up 15 GB out of 135 GB," "backing up 30GB out of 135 GB." I can't recall the exact language, and I can no longer find entries from yesterday on the log, but the just was that the computer seemed from the beginning to attempt to backup only 135 GB rather than the full 160. At the end, there was a message the backup had successfully completed.
I haven't excluded any files from that backup so that's not the issue either.
I called tech support, and they helped for a while until they told me Air Disk is not supported for Time Machine. I was told however that the sparse bundle is a compressed file.
Any insights into this? Is this how my backup is supposed to look or is something going wrong?
Many thanks in advance!

Does anyone know of a way to remove the software that pops up each time you insert a WD Passport USB drive? The software is called WD Smartware and it appears on the desktop as a CD icon. I have tried a number of easy solutions to no avail. Thanks in advance.

Do LAN ports on AirPort Extreme ...
YOU can help me, I hope. I have tried to solve the problem for a whole day already.
I have a D-link DIR-825 and an AirPort Extreme (Gigabit). I set my DIR-825 to work like a normal router. However, I would like to have my AirPort working like an Ethernet converter/Wireless Bridge.
From my research, it seems to me that WDS would not be possible with a non-apple router. "Client mode" is only offered in AirPort Express. The only opinion left is "Extend a wireless network" mode.
It works. AirPort gets an IP from my router, but the devices on LAN ports don't get any IPs.
I wonder if it supposes to work like that, or did I do something wrong?
Thank you for reading this post, even though you might not know the answer. But if you know, please help to solve this mystery for me. Thanks in advance.

The Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) specification allows users to specify up to four different WEP keys when configuring a router and for the specification of a "key index" (also sometimes called the "Default Transmit Key") used to specify which of the encryption keys is required to associate with the network. By manually specifying a different key index, an administrator would be able to manually rotate among the WEP keys without having to enter new keys each time.
However, AirPort drivers, in compliance with the Wi-Fi Alliance standard, will only associate with a WEP encrypted network when the router is set to use the key corresponding to a key index of 1.
Configuration of a router to use a key index other than 1 will likely result in either a failure to associate with the chosen network, or association will occur but no IP address will be assigned by the router's DHCP server; the precise failure will be router manufacturer dependent.
Apple AirPort base stations do not provide for the configuration of multiple WEP keys, so this issue does not occur when connecting to a WEP network created by an Apple AirPort device.
As a reminder, WEP has long since been broken due to weak encryption and has been deprecated as a network security protocol. It should never be used except to prevent only the most casual of users from associating with your network; it also should never be used in environments where any data security of any type is desired.
Whenever creating a wireless network, whether with Apple AirPort base stations or with third party routers, the use of WPA or WPA2 encryption in conjunction with a strong passphrase is highly recommended to keep your wireless network secure.
