Airport Extreme signal strength question ...

hello,

I just recently set up my new airport extreme base station, but have been having problems. I have a 12" PowerBook G4 and my girlfriend has a MacBook that has an 'N' wireless card, mine has a 'G.' While sitting in the same room, she can connect to the wireless with no problems, while the signal strength for me fluctuates a bit and sometimes drops out complete (or when I open my computer I cant even connect). I changed the 'G' channel to 2 instead of automatic and that seems to help a bit, but I am no more than 30 (probably less) feet away when it does this, in clear site of the router. I never had a problem with my old D-link. When I open internet connection, I only have about 4 bars out of 15. Did I set something up wrong? Is it the router? My computer? Any help will be greatly appreciated.
